We have awarded a grant of $10,000 to Thursday Island Animal Support Group to help facilitate two desexing clinics on Thursday Island in collaboration with Vets Beyond Borders and Animal Welfare League QLD. These clinics also service animals that reside on four neighbouring islands. There is no permanent vet service in the region, and without these regular visits, the amount of unwanted litters and subsequent dogs surrendered to rescue increases. The clinics also provide the opportunity to educate about the importance of preventative treatments for heartworm, ticks and worms as well as vaccinations and microchipping, improving the ongoing health and wellbeing of pets in the region.
TIASG have already facilitated four successful desexing clinics with Vets Beyond Borders and AWLQ (all photos in this post are from the last clinic that they ran earlier this year), and the community is becoming more aware and open to the services being provided. This was demonstrated by the results of the last clinic where they had 134 dogs attend in 5 days!
TIASG organise the vet staff flights, manage appointments, provide volunteers to assist at the clinics as well as all of the on ground support which includes things like washing, transporting dogs, record keeping, cleaning, and generally making things run like clock work!
