Although primarily a foster care based rescue, DFL regularly pays to place dogs in kennels to save them when there is a risk of euthanasia and they don’t have appropriate foster homes available, sometimes because of a dog’s behavioural issue or fear reactions.
When DFL Rescue have a carer or adoptive home who are willing to work with their harder to place dogs, they want to provide every opportunity for it to work. We have committed funding of up to $10,000 to cover the cost of the rescue’s chosen dog trainer to attend sessions in a foster carer’s home to work with both the dogs and carers so they can more easily transition into a new home life. The funding will cover 3 x one-on-one sessions for 19 dogs.
The expected outcomes of this project don’t only address the particular dogs that will attend the training sessions, but also extend to long term change involving education and upskilling of foster carers and volunteers, providing them confidence in training and managing issues with future dogs that come into their care.
It is hoped that as result of the opportunity to receive extra behavioural training sessions, dogs will move out of kennels and into foster homes sooner, improving their quality of life and saving DFL precious funds. The real benefit will be seeing them head off to their forever home sooner with a confident wag in their tail!
We look forward to sharing some updates on this program soon!
